Cochlear is the global market leader in implant hearing solutions and is a top 50 company on the ASX. Cochlear's mission is to help people Hear and Be Heard. Our Algorithms and Applications Team is currently looking for a Senior Research Software Engineer, based in our location in Mechelen.
The Senior Research Software Engineer is part of a team of research engineers, whose responsibility is the creation of investigational device software and research tools using a variety of technologies, i.e. desktop, cloud computing, web and mobile platforms. Specific to this role is the focus on desktop application development in C#. This role specifically encompasses the software engineering responsibility that requires the person to have a good understanding of the particularities of developing software in the medical industry.
To deliver swiftly on functional prototypes exploring new concepts and de-risking novel technologies, the engineer will often work within cross-functional research squads, consisting of members of various R&D departments such as A&A, Clinical Research, Customer Software and Embedded Software.
The engineer will be responsible for the full software prototype development cycle: design, coding, testing, verification, deployment, and documentation. He/she should be able to contribute to application code development in C# in a .NET/WPF environment. Being familiar with C++, cloud computing in Amazon Web Services and/or application code development in Swift targeting the iOS platform is a plus.
Affinity with the hardware-software interface and a basic understanding of electronics technology is required.
The engineer needs to demonstrate a passion for lean research, eager to learn, and explore new technologies. He/she should be open minded towards incorporating research learnings in the next project deliverables, showing flexibility in dealing with evolving insights in the research topics and product concepts.
Key Responsibilities
- Capture and analyze the incoming research requirements translating them into software technical designs and implementation.
- Focus on the deliverables of the project: design and develop prototypes for next generation Cochlear’s Hearing implant applications.
- Define the overall software architecture, including partitioning of the software across desktop, mobile and cloud platforms.
- Contribute to application code in C# in a .NET/WPF environment.
- Support cloud development and deployment on the AWS platform.
- High-quality design and development.
- Participate in verification activities when necessary or appropriate.

- Write and maintain technical documentation of the module or subproject.
- Ability to communicate openly and constructively with other team members, and knowledge sharing within the team and across teams.
- Engage with the collaborative team culture, share ideas and experiences, and be open and available to suggestions from other members of the team.
- Follow internal project procedures and apply the required design controls.
- Contribute ideas on systems and process methods to improve deliverables.
Key requirements
- Master’s degree in software engineering or electrical engineering.
- Good knowledge of object-oriented software development, specifically C#.
- Familiar with Agile development.
- Customer oriented and Innovation mindset.
- Strong interest in and experience with quality management systems and standards for software design.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Affinity with the hardware-software interface and electronics technology.
- Ability to have a broad perspective on technical development.
- Proven experience in handling requirements and design documents.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
